Up here, the clouds swirl below you like a frothy ocean, and for a split second, you feel like you’ve been given a VIP backstage pass to creation itself. But Haleakalā is more than a morning spectacle. This is a volcano that carved its own legend, where Hawaiian gods lassoed the sun, rare silversword plants bloom like props from a sci-fi set, and the crater floor stretches out like Mars without the space helmet. One side of the park drops you into an alien desert of cinder cones and lava rock, while the other bursts with bamboo forests and waterfalls loud enough to drown out your thoughts.
